What Is Food Intolerance?

A food intolerance is difficulty digesting certain foods and having an unpleasant physical reaction to them. As individuals, our reactions to foods and drinks vary a great deal. An ingredient which may cause problems for one person could be completely acceptable for another.

Food intolerance can cause a wide range of disruptive symptoms such as digestive problems, eczema, migraines and headaches, fatigue, depression and low mood, joint pains and sinusitis.

Are Blood Tests for Food Intolerances Accurate?

If you haven’t eaten a particular food at all for more than 6 weeks, it may not be picked up by our test. However, if for example you are cutting out dairy but still have a small splash of milk in your tea once a week, this will still be identified by our testing if you are intolerant. We advise you continue your diet as normal before taking the test.

The laboratory is regularly audited by independent authorities, staffed by fully trained and highly qualified scientists and uses the very latest equipment and procedures to ensure the utmost accuracy. It uses the ELISA testing method, widely regarded as the most accurate and valid IgG test available and is governed by the Medicines Healthcare Regulatory Agency.

What Will Food & Drink Intolerance Results Tell Me?

The Food & Drink Intolerance Test will analyse your IgG antibody reactions to 208 food and drink ingredients. There are four different types of food-specific IgG antibodies and we test the levels of all four of these to pinpoint the ingredients your body is reacting to.

Immunoglobulin (IgG) is a type of antibody. Antibodies are major components of the immune system. In normal human blood IgG1 is the most prevalent making up 60-70% of the total IgG, followed by IgG2 (20-30%) and IgG3 (5-8%). IgG4 only consists of 1-4% of the food-specific IgG antibodies present.

This test measures IgG1, IgG2, IgG3 and IgG4.

You will receive clear, colour-coded results of your test within 10 working days. These will summarise the complete list of ingredients in three categories. If a food or drink appears in the green column, this means there is no reaction to that ingredient. Should it appear in the red or amber column, this means that a strong (red) or borderline (amber) IgG reaction has been detected.

Your results will arrive in a pack, which also contains a food and drink diary and a support booklet. These resources will give you lots more useful information about food intolerance and nutrition in general and the diary is ideal for recording your progress as you begin to remove your “trigger foods” from your diet.

When you have received your results and are ready, you can contact the laboratory to book your appointment with one of their BANT (British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine) registered nutritional therapists. These half hour sessions will provide you with support and knowledge to assist you in your new diet, ensuring you are confident in the changes you can make to improve your health and wellbeing.

Please note that this test will NOT pick up on the following:

  • Food allergies (IgE antibodies)
  • Coeliac disease
  • Enzyme deficiencies, such as lactose intolerance
  • Histamine sensitivity
  • Chemical sensitivities
  • Ingredients that are not in your diet

What Is the Difference Between Allergy and Intolerance?

A food intolerance can occur when the body has difficulty digesting certain foods. When this occurs over time, large food particles (proteins) may enter the blood stream and this can cause inflammation.

When foods and drinks are digested, the proteins within them are broken down into smaller fragments for easy absorption into the body.  Larger fragments can pass through without breaking down, and sometimes the body reacts by attacking them using antibodies called Immunoglobulin G’s (IgG).

A food-specific IgG reaction should not be confused with food allergies, nor other types of food intolerances, which we do not test for. These include enzyme deficiencies e.g. lactose (milk sugar) intolerance, Coeliac disease requiring lifelong avoidance of gluten, chemical sensitivities e.g. histamine, tyramine, sulphites etc

Food intolerance can cause a wide range of disruptive symptoms such as digestive problems, eczema, migraines and headaches, fatigue, depression and low mood, joint pains and sinusitis.

A food allergy can cause a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis. This is when released chemicals act on the blood vessels to cause swelling. Food allergies normally appear instantly and up to two hours after consumption.

* We define Food Intolerance as a food-specific IgG reaction. Our information is intended to provide nutritional advice for dietary optimisation. We recommend that you discuss food intolerance symptoms with a GP before undertaking a Food & Drink Intolerance Test. This is to fully investigate the potential causes which may include investigations for coeliac disease and/or lactose intolerance and provide the medical follow up required.
